We are Piano Pop for the Lyrically Inclined.

We are a broadway musical starring Ben Folds Five, Tori Amos, Elton John, Ella Fitzgerald, Jamie Cullum and Regina Spektor. We are Fleetwood Mac with a Jazzy Piano. We also play cover tunes for various events.

I know how to it is to not want to sort through e-mails or read the fine print on our gigs page. Here are the basic details for this Friday’s SF show. We would love to see you there.

When and Who: Friday August 8th
Dana Carmel from 8-9pm (times are sharp!)
GWT from 9-10pm with guests Vanessa on vocals and Ian on keys
DJ Tom Thump from 10pm on

Where: The Make-Out Room in the Mission
3225 22nd St between Mission and Valencia
24th St. BART or Bus Lines
#49 & 14 Mission both stop on Mission @ 22nd Street
#26 stops on Valencia @ 22nd Street

Price: $5 if the security person shows up that early (rarely happens)

More Details: 21 and over. Elevated stage. Full bands for both acts. Ambiance is large high-ceilinged dive bar with pews and tables. Professional sound system and sound guy. Mexican restaurants are plenty in the immediate vicinity, not to mention bar-hopping for afterward.

A Change of Pace in Pleasant Hill

Word on the street is that GWT was a nice change of pace at the Pleasant Hill Summer Concert series. Thanks to Trevor and Rusty of Dynamic Audio Concepts for doing our sound. Also, thanks to the Civic Action Committee of Pleasant Hill and the sponsor Champlin for making the event possible. It was beautiful and warm, though the wind and chill came in just at the end of our second set.

Thanks to Jacki for bringing her whole work crew out to see us. Thanks also to Don J., Elizabeth R., John Z., Randy S., David D., Deborah D., Natalia S., Lou D., Mike, Julia, Angela, Lauren, Kathleen, Greg K., Ellen P. and Gary for reaching out and connecting with us!

What a lovely setting for a city hall! I will put pictures up from the event later tonight and you may recognize yourself!

Thanks for Making it a Great Show Last Night!

Special thanks to ICSI, Rusty Bindings Ski Club, Ex’Pressions, WCS, BCM, Chris, Robert, Miles, Ira, Doctor Jeff, Colette and Crew, Collin, Charlotte, Keith, Chris, Angela, Kristen, Mrs. Perry, David, Lori, Robert S., Jacob W and Rolf on sound, Xylar, Vanessa, Winston, Steve, Gabriele, Yan, Acacia, Robby, Etai, Kate, Jim, Patricia, Michael C., Ellen, Myles, Chie and everyone who came to the show last night and made it memorable for us.

I’m so glad I got a chance to say hello to almost everyone and see how things are going. Hearing the band with electric guitar was nice. The servers kept commenting that we have the best friends, since they say people rarely stay for two sets there. We do have the best friends and we thank you for staying! We are so grateful to all of our guest musicians last night.

We’ve gotten to know you better and, as a result, we’ve had a chance to give you a better show every time. Thanks for making it all possible by showing up and speaking up. We had a great time.

And happy birthday this week to Cyndi Powell, Devon Woods, Amanda Beisen, Valerie Downing, Dave Collodel, Jeremy O’ Brien and Collin Doran!

Goodbye Dinner for Friend

Last night Joe and Whitney and I went over to Tim’s house. Tim is a dear friend we all met at the Blake’s open mic. He recorded an EP a year and a half ago on which Whit played drums, Joe played bass and Steve Laciak played guitar (Steve is playing guitar at our next big show August 1st). Steve was at the dinner too with his gal, and he asked me who the great lyricists were. I replied with praise for Stevie Nicks, the band “Live”, Fiona Apple, Pearl Jam and Pink Floyd on occasion and Pat Benatar. And then I admitted I was merely so lyric-based because college inundated me with the poetry of Edna Saint Vincent Millay and other similar visionaries. Simon and Garfunkel were rather poetic, but it’s true poetry doesn’t translate to lyrics most of the time. I admire country songs for the way many of them can be read as a monologue; truth and pain and all; direct and simple because under our eloquence, fear and love often are simple roots.

We sat in Tim’s living room and listened to the EP, the flowy songs mixed by Dan Noceti, and I watched Whitney smile as he rediscovered drum parts he created over a year ago.

Tim explained again how he ended up on his way to Syria to teach English. That’s why it was a goodbye party too. He sold his Oakland house to teach in Syria with his wife at an International school and they both have already begun to learn Arabic. The world is now their children and they are the true pioneers in counteracting the short-sightedness of our young country’s culture.
